The story of the piece
Culture Urbaine has left the vegetable patch.
On a bag in wardrobe-classic houndstooth, asparagus, an aubergine, a cauliflower and a strawberry have settled in, all in crochet. An unlikely little harvest on a bag that, without them, might almost have been well-behaved.
Almost.
The houndstooth brings its rigour, its lines and its slightly tailored air. The crochet comes along to shake it all up, with its volumes, its colours and just the right dose of the unexpected.
Each element is hand-crocheted in cotton. The stitches trace the leaves, the stalks and the relief, giving every vegetable a shape of its own.
The vegetable patch has moved to the city. And it seems to be settling in rather nicely.
Why we love it
Because there’s something deliciously offbeat about parading a bunch of asparagus and an aubergine across houndstooth.
Because the classic pattern gives the crochet a playground nobody saw coming.
Because it looks just as at home between two bookshelves as hanging from a bicycle or on a street corner.
And because it sums up the Atelier 189 spirit rather well: take something familiar, shift it ever so slightly, and see what happens.
The time it takes
The time it takes
Each element is worked separately: the shapes are built up stitch by stitch, firmly stuffed, then assembled. Crochet takes time because it cannot go any faster than the hand. That is precisely what gives it its structure, its relief and its presence.
